A storyteller’s narrative is designed to express the storyteller’s feelings about some aspect of life, and to engage the reader in those feelings. A poet uses events, images and people to deliver concentrated emotion. Dramatists and screen writers convey and stir emotions through action and dialogue. A magazine feature writer comments on real people and real lives to arouse our sympathy, delight, horror or concern. The point is that almost any genre or category of writing can be written to engage the reader emotionally as well as intellectually. What makes a work more creative than informative is its emphasis. Informative writing is primarily about imparting knowledge. Creative writing is primarily about creating emotional effect and significance.
Differences between creative and informative writing are sometimes quite blurred. Some well-known and esteemed pieces of writing that are primarily informative are also very creative, sensitive and beautiful, while some primarily creative works are also highly informative. To understand this better, read a chapter from A.S. Byatt’s novel, Possession, Tolstoy’s War and Peace, Dee Brown’s history, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and James Mitchener’s epic novel, Hawaii. You will also see writing where creativity and information carry equal weight and importance in some newspaper feature articles, often found in the centre pages of the weekend editions, and in many magazine articles. Good writing uses the same kinds of writing that make for good informative writing, or good argument, or good exposition. It is the writer’s skill at using these forms of writing that can turn any piece of writing into creative piece of writing. Even when we write fiction, we are dealing with reality as we know it. Fictional does not mean false. It takes our reality, or parts of it, and shows it to us in new ways. It makes the familiar unfamiliar, and takes us into parts of reality, making us take the time (because we read much slower than we think or see) to see its complexity, beauty and pain. Even fantasy fiction and science fiction, which give us totally created worlds, are based on elements of reality, and are therefore recognizable and believable. Therefore, when we write creatively, it doesn’t matter whether we are writing fiction or non-fiction. What matters is that we are sharing experiences and emotions with the reader and, for a while at least, leading them towards a particular point of view.
Genre is a word often used to describe categories or types of written text. Some of the more familiar genres of creative writing are: poetry of all kinds; short stories; novels, including westerns, romances, science fiction, detective stories, mysteries, fantasy, etc; stage play scripts, film and television screenplays; lyrics. Other genres that we may not think of as creative writing are: magazine articles; newspaper feature stories; essays; biographies; advertisements; card greetings; books or articles on science, history etc.
Let us now give you an understanding of the elements of creative writing in fiction. The elements are character, point of view, plot, setting, dialogue (fiction), style (fiction), theme and motif.
Character: A character (or fictional character) is a person in a narrative work of arts (such as a novel, play, television series or film).Derived from the ancient Greek word χαρακτήρ, the English word dates from the Restoration, although it became widely used after its appearance in Tom Jones in 1749. From this, the sense of "a part played by an actor" developed. Character, particularly when enacted by an actor in the theatre or cinema, involves "the illusion of being a human person." In literature, characters guide readers through their stories, helping them to understand plots and ponder themes. Since the end of the 18th century, the phrase "in character" has been used to describe an effective impersonation by an actor. Since the 19th century, the art of creating characters, as practiced by actors or writers, has been called characterization. A character who stands as a representative of a particular class or group of people is known as a type. Types include both stock characters and those that are more fully individualized. The characters in Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler (1891) and August Strindberg's Miss Julie (1888), for example, are representative of specific positions in the social relations of class and gender, such that the conflicts between the characters reveal ideological conflicts. The study of a character requires an analysis of its relations with all of the other characters in the work. The individual status of a character is defined through the network of oppositions (proairetic, pragmatic, linguistic, proxemic) that it forms with the other characters. The relation between characters and the action of the story shifts historically, often miming shifts in society and its ideas about human individuality, self-determination, and the social order.
Setting (narrative): In works of narrative (especially fictional), the literary element setting includes the historical moment in time and geographic location in which a story takes place, and helps initiate the main backdrop and mood for a story. Setting has been referred to as story world or milieu to include a context (especially society) beyond the immediate surroundings of the story. Elements of setting may include culture, historical period, geography, and hour. Along with the plot, character, theme, and style, setting is considered one of the fundamental components of fiction and novelist Donna Levin has described how this social milieu shapes the characters’ values. The elements of the story setting include the passage of time, which may be static in some stories or dynamic in others with, for example, changing seasons.
Theme (narrative): In contemporary literary studies, a theme is the central topic a text treats. Themes can be divided into two categories: a work's thematic concept is what readers "think the work is about" and its thematic statement being "what the work says about the subject". The most common contemporary understanding of theme is an idea or point that is central to a story, which can often be summed in a single word (e.g. love, death, betrayal). Typical examples of themes of this type are conflict between the individual and society; coming of age; humans in conflict with technology; nostalgia; and the dangers of unchecked ambition. A theme may be exemplified by the actions, utterances, or thoughts of a character in a novel. An example of this would be the theme loneliness in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, wherein many of the characters seem to be lonely. It may differ from the thesis---the text's or author's implied worldview. A story may have several themes. Themes often explore historically common or cross-culturally recognizable ideas, such as ethical questions, and are usually implied rather than stated explicitly. An example of this would be whether one should live a seemingly better life, at the price of giving up parts of one's humanity, which is a theme in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Along with plot, character, setting, and style, theme is considered one of the components of fiction.
Motif (narrative): In narrative, a motif is any recurring element that has symbolic significance in a story. Through its repetition, a motif can help produce other narrative (or literary) aspects such as theme or mood. A narrative motif can be created through the use of imagery, structural components, language, and other narrative elements. The flute in Arthur Miller's play Death of a Salesman is a recurrent sound motif that conveys rural and idyllic notions. Another example from modern American literature is the green light found in the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Narratives may include multiple motifs of varying types. In Shakespeare's play Macbeth, he uses a variety of narrative elements to create many different motifs. Imagistic references to blood and water are continually repeated. The phrase "fair is foul, and foul is fair" is echoed at many points in the play, a combination that mixes the concepts of good and evil. The play also features the central motif of the washing of hands, one that combines both verbal images and the movement of the actors. In a narrative, a motif establishes a pattern of ideas that may serve different conceptual purposes in different works. Kurt Vonnegut, for example, in his non-linear narratives such as Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat's Cradle makes frequent use of motif to connect different moments that might seem otherwise separated by time and space. In the American science fiction cult classic Blade Runner, director Ridley Scott uses motifs to not only establish a dark and shadowy film noir atmosphere, but also to weave together the thematic complexities of the plot. Throughout the film, the recurring motif of "eyes" is connected to a constantly changing flow of images, and sometimes violent manipulations, in order to call into question our ability, and the narrator's own, to accurately perceive and understand reality.
Narration: Narration is the use of---or the particularly chosen methodology or process (also called the narrative mode) of using---a written or spoken commentary to convey a story to an audience. Narration encompasses a set of techniques through which the creator of the story presents their story, including: Narrative point of view: the perspective (or type of personal or non-personal "lens") through which a story is communicated; Narrative voice: the format (or type of presentational form) through which a story is communicated; Narrative time: the placement of the story's time-frame in the past, the present, or the future. A narrator is a personal character or a non-personal voice that the creator of the story develops to deliver information to the audience, particularly about the plot. The narrator may be a voice devised by the author as an anonymous, non-personal, or stand-alone entity; as the author her/himself as a character; or as some other fictional or non-fictional character appearing and participating within their own story. The narrator is considered participant if he/she is a character within the story, and non-participant if he/she is an implied character or an omniscient or semi-omniscient being or voice that merely relates the story to the audience without being involved in the actual events. Some stories have multiple narrators to illustrate the story-lines of various characters at the same, similar, or different times, thus allowing a more complex, non-singular point of view. Narration encompasses not only who tells the story, but also how the story is told (for example, by using stream of consciousness or unreliable narration). In traditional literary narratives (such as novels, short stories, and memoirs), narration is a required story element; in other types of (chiefly non-literary) narratives, such as plays, television shows, video games, and films, narration is merely optional.
Dialogue in writing: Dialogue in fiction, is a verbal exchange between two or more characters. If there is only one character talking aloud, it is a monologue.
Style (fiction): In fiction, style is the codified gestures, in which the author tells the story. Along with plot, character, theme, and setting, style is considered one of the fundamental components of fiction.
There are many different types of creative writing and the different types change rapidly. Look at the idea of flash fiction. This is a relatively new idea. Flash fiction is the idea of a very short story. There is no universal agreement of how short, but the word length ranges from 300 words to 1000 words.
1) Poetry: Essentially, a poem is written in verse, based on line and stanzas. A poem or a song tends to be more elusive, or mysterious, because it has limited space. Because of its spatial limitations, however, it can make leaps in subject and time, and it doesn't have to rely on narrative structure. In poetry and songs, literary devices, like similes and metaphors, can be used to take the readers to surprising places. There are many different types of poetry, from ballads to rhyming couplets to free verse. Poets will develop their own style and way of writing their poems. They may be about nature or situations or events or love. The way that we write poetry has evolved and changed over time. The poet uses literary devices, such as simile, metaphor, and imagery to write about a subject, with the intention of evoking an emotional response and communicating deep meaning to the reader. How poets write and what the public wants to read has obviously changed. A poet, like a novel writer, will develop their own style of writing poetry.
2) Essays: In the modern world, we are used to thinking of essays as something that we write at school. But essays have been a form of creative writing. An essay is a piece of writing from the author’s point of view, such as their thoughts on politics, literary criticism and so on. Essays are usually written in prose, but occasionally can be in verse. Examples of famous essays include – An Essay on Criticism – Alexander Pope; An Essay on Man – Alexander Pope; An Essay on the Principle of Population – Thomas Malthus; An Essay Concerning Human Understanding – John Locke.
3) News Items: A news item is obviously not fiction, but the way that the story is put together involves creativity. How it is phrased, organized and so on. Next time you listen to the news, think about how they present the story. Look at the little tickertape at the bottom of the TV screen – look at how they summarize a story. This is based on the facts of the story, but still done creatively. Think about headlines in a newspaper. These present the story in a certain way. News is obviously factual, but it can also be done creatively and biased. It can also be sensationalized by some writers. A news story can be biased depending on who is reporting the story. This is the same in any “factual” story. Think about history – history is written by the person who has told or written it – his-story. The news is the same. So the news is created depending on the bias of the writer(s) and how they wish to present the news. There are also news programs, blogs, magazine articles and so on, which can also present the news, but talk about it from a person’s point of view. Robert Peston is a British journalist who has become famous for his writing about the financial services industry. He is also a public speaker and writes blogs and articles about his own opinions of different stories. For example, the new budget may appear on the news, but a journalist may write about THEIR opinion of the new budget, or present it in a certain biased way. For example, “NEW TAX BAD FOR THE MIDDLE CLASSES”.
4) Spin Doctors: A spin doctor is spokesperson who gives a favorable version of events to the media or general public. Spin doctors are usually used by political parties. To be able to put a positive spin on a negative situation can require a great deal of creativity.
5) Screenplays and Stage Plays: Screen plays are plays written to appear on the screen – TV or cinema. Stage plays are obviously plays written to appear on the stage. Stage plays will be written in slightly different ways to screen plays, but they can obviously overlap. For example, a stage play can become a film, such as Romeo and Juliet, Of Mice and Men etc. Or the other way around screen plays can become stage plays eg. The Full Monty was a film first and has now become a stage play. Obviously stage plays and screenplays can also come from other forms of creating writing. For example, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck was a book originally. Poems can be made into plays as well. For example, Beowulf has been made into a film.
6) Novels: Novels are one of the most popular forms. Novel writers seem to be the most well known writers and may present as the greatest role model to new writers. Obviously poets, such as John Betjemen or stage play writers, such as Shakespeare, are well known, but in recent times, the most famous writers have been novel writers, such as J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, Charlene Harris, Robert Ludlum and so on. Novels can basically be about any topic, but there are obviously fashions within novels, different genre that sell at certain times, then not at others. So the commercial aspects of writing do influence what actually sells. With recent changes in self-publishing, eBooks and the internet, more and more authors are successfully self publishing. In some cases, they may sell books themselves. In other cases, this can result in an author obtaining a publishing deal after self publishing. A novel can be shorter or longer.
7) Novella: Shorter novels are called novellas. They do not necessarily sell as well as novels, but again, this can be due to what is in “fashion” at a particular time. The amount of words considered to make a book a novella vary, but it is usually accepted to be between 25,000 and 40,000 words. Unlike the short story or novella, most novels are 300 to 400 pages or 100,000 to 175,000 words. Some novels are longer. For instance, Don Quixote is 700 pages, and Ulysses is 783 pages.
8) Short Stories: Short stories are obviously even shorter. They usually appear in an anthology of an author’s work or an anthology of a group of authors’ works. A short story is usually considered to be under 7,500 words. Writing a short story is different and many beginning writers can be daunted by the task. Luckily, writing a short story isn't nearly as difficult as it may seem at first and by remembering some basic tricks you can be well on your way. For example, don't try to make the story too far-fetched. Some of the best stories have seemingly mundane settings and plots. The best stories are believable. It will be the characters that truly shape the story. If you can't think of anything, take a story from your own life. Countless professional authors advocate writing from life. Everyone has told a story aloud. Take that story and expand it. Feel free to change it around as much as you like-it doesn't have to stick to the exact history of what happened.
9) Blogs: Blogs is a shortened form of weblogs. Anyone can have a blog online if they have access to a computer and the internet. Blogs can be stories, factual, diaries and so on. There are many blogs out there. Some authors will keep blogs to talk about how they feel, to publicize their own stories and so on. Have a look at blogs that are available.
